How I do it...!

Phonics is the key to a strong start in reading. Using Read Write Inc, I teach children the 44 sounds and their corresponding letters, enabling them to decode words fluently and build solid literacy skills. It's about empowering children to become confident readers and unlocking the magic of language through phonics.

As well as reading I support my pupils with spelling. I introduce them to different letter combinations and phonetic rules while also teaching spelling using mnemonics. This approach is designed to foster the development of strong foundational skills that support their reading and writing abilities.

In my handwriting approach, I emphasise proper letter formation using the Read Write Inc handwriting rhymes. I engage students with interactive activities like tracing on whiteboards or using sandpaper letters for a tactile experience. Regular drills, personalised feedback, and positive reinforcement contribute to improved fine motor skills and handwriting confidence.

I encourage all my pupils to read for pleasure. I have curated my own library of award-winning books which my pupils can choose from weekly.  For my virtual pupils I recommend books at the end of each lesson, giving them the opportunity to create a library of their own.

I offer pupils access to audiobooks, which are highly beneficial for children. Audiobooks promote literacy, enhance listening skills, expand vocabulary, and ignite a passion for storytelling through captivating narrations and engaging audio experiences.

Stickers are universally loved by children for their tangible recognition and positive reinforcement, I use stickers, certificates, and parental feedback to boost motivation and self-esteem in children's learning. Additionally, Golden Moment  awards to recognise and celebrate hard work, effort, and results.  For virtual students, I offer digital stickers and emojis as online session rewards, along with certificates for celebrating milestones and achievements.

As a reading coach, I find that Read Write Inc. reading books are invaluable for supporting children's phonics development, improving their reading fluency, and enhancing comprehension skills. The carefully levelled and structured texts gradually increase in complexity, enabling children to progress and build confidence in their reading abilities. 

Using engaging resources enhances learning experiences by captivating children's attention, stimulating their curiosity, and making educational activities more enjoyable and interactive, thereby promoting active participation and deep understanding of the subject matter.

The phonics screening check assesses children's phonics skills in Year 1.  By pinpointing areas of weakness, I can provide targeted interventions to help my pupils improve their reading and decoding abilities.

I'm excited to announce that I will soon be hosting a virtual book club! This fantastic opportunity allows children to socialise with friends and like-minded individuals while deepening their love for books. The book club will feature discussions about various aspects of books, including physical attributes, different authors, illustrators, and genres such as picture books, poems, non-fiction, and biographies. It's going to be an enriching and enjoyable experience for all young book enthusiasts!

Join my story sessions at different venues and bookstores, where children can listen to me read my favorite children's books from award-winning authors. These captivating sessions develop listening skills, expand vocabulary, and foster a love for books and storytelling. 

As well as my face-to-face lessons, I now offer lessons worldwide, using the same resources and methodologies. As well as coaching  children based in different parts of the UK, I teach children online in locations across the globe from New York to Tokyo!  

I can assist parents by providing book recommendations for their children. These recommendations encompass a diverse range of captivating and age-appropriate stories, fostering a love for reading and exposing children to various perspectives, themes, and genres. 

As a reading consultant, I offer expert guidance and support to parents. My goal is to provide tailored strategies and resources that enhance reading instruction, improve literacy skills, and foster a love for reading in children of all ages.
